As part of the surf revival movement of the early ’90s, Auburn’s Man or Astro-man? specializes in space-age surf music. Formed in 1992, the band originally featured members with quirky aliases like Birdstuff (drums), Star Crunch (guitar), Dr. Delecto & his Invisible Vaportron (bass), and Electronic Monkey Wizard (alternate-universe bass). They combined classic ’60s surf sounds with a humorous twist and released numerous albums throughout the ’90s, including “Is It…Man or Astro Man?” (1993), “Destroy All Astromen!!” (1994), and “Experiment Zero” (1996). Despite lineup changes, the band continued into the 21st century with albums like “A Spectrum of Infinite Scale” (2000) and a compilation, “Beyond the Black Hole” (2001). After a hiatus, they briefly reunited in 2006 and again in 2010, releasing “Defcon 5…4…3…2…1” in 2013, their first new album in over a decade.
